Dan Johnston – Skateparks: Trace and Culture

Skateparks: Trace and Culture is an exhibition of photographs that showcases practice based research conducted for Dan Johnston’s Doctorate of Creative Arts degree at Western Sydney University. Johnston’s photographs reveal the complex relationships that occur both with, and within skateparks, and demonstrate the important role that the skatepark plays in youth culture. These images reveal that skateboarding is much more than an aggressive, tribal subculture, full of swagger and machismo - it is a culture that can also nurture a sense of belonging and mentorship. From the inane to the deeply personal, from the city to the country, from the marginalised to the connected, recurring visual traces shed light on the significant role that the skatepark plays in sections of youth culture. Time: 10am – 4pm. Thursday to Sunday Only. Free entry.
