The Summit of Her Ambition: The Spirited Life of Marie Byles

Marie Byles triumphed over the chauvinistic legal profession and a society that viewed women as second-class by establishing a successful legal practice. An avid explorer-mountaineer, Marie climbed Mt Cook and mapped previously unexplored areas of New Zealand's Southern Alps. Her failure to achieve the summit of a mountain in Yunnan Province in 1938 became the catalyst for a journey into realms not found on a map. Marie Byles' life story has powerful narratives about human rights, conservation, ecology, feminism and spirituality. Anne McLeod's presentation will be illustrated by Marie's own photographs of her adventurous life and travels around the world. Time: 2.30pm - 4.00pm. Free Entry.
